How Live Guest Painting Works at a Wedding
For planners who haven't booked a live wedding painter before, here's what to expect on the day.
Setup Before the Drinks Reception
I arrive one hour before the drinks reception to set up. I bring all of my own supplies, so all I need from the venue is a table and a chair, and I can bring those too if requested. A sign at the station explains to guests what I'm doing and how they can take part.
No Posing Required
Guests are never asked to stand in front of me while I paint. Instead, I take a quick photo to use as a reference, and they go right back to enjoying the reception. Nobody misses a toast or a conversation.
Painting Through Dinner and the Reception
After cocktail hour, I can move my station into the dinner space. Guests can stop by throughout the evening to watch the portraits take shape and ask questions. For many guests, watching a portrait come to life is part of the entertainment.
A Pop-Up Gallery of Guest Portraits
Each finished portrait goes into a protective sleeve and is displayed on a table, which becomes a tiny pop-up gallery. Guests enjoy looking through it during the meal, recognizing themselves and their friends, and they're free to take their own portrait home as soon as it's complete.
How Many Guests Can Be Painted?
I paint on 7 x 10" archival paper with studio-quality watercolors. A single guest takes about 4–6 minutes and a couple about 10–12 minutes, plus a little transition time. That's roughly 8–10 single guests or 5–6 couples per hour, or about 45–50 guests over a five-hour booking. I'm available for 5–6 hours on-site, and other paper sizes are available at no additional charge.
Studio Portraits for Every Guest
Depending on the size of the guest list, not every guest will be painted during the event, and not every guest will ask for a portrait. For couples who want everyone included, I offer studio portraits at $50 per person. These are painted after the wedding and mailed directly to the couple to include in their thank-you cards.

Share the guest count early. It helps the couple decide how many hours to book and whether to add studio portraits.
Choose a visible spot. A station near the cocktail area, or with a clear sightline from dinner, keeps guests curious and involved.
